EXCLUSIVE : Ewan McGregor and daughter Clara McGregor make their first public appearance tonight at the SXSW premiere at the Zach Theater. In the road trip drama Clara, co-written by Ruby Custer and directed by Emma Westenberg, they play an estranged father and son who find themselves in the wake of a major crisis. After starting a new family, he inherited his long lost taste for drug addiction and debauchery and nearly died of an overdose. Hoping to save her and bridge the gap between them, the father takes his daughter on a road trip, but he doesn't say it will end when he sends her to rehab. There's a glimmer of McGregor's true story here, but it's fictional and will appeal to any parent who wants to hug their child every fall, only to realize they've ended up a helpless bystander. The purchasable film premieres at 9:15 PM CST at SXSW Worldwide. Here, the film's stars talk about their first on-screen collaboration and the challenges and rewards it brought. DEADLINE: You Sing, I Sing Louder is the story of a father-daughter journey made all the more poignant by the presence of her father's daughter in the car. There is humor, guilt and some horror for the father who sees his daughter as she used to be and feels guilty that she is gone when she briefly disappears. In an attempt to make up for his absence, he takes her to rehab, keeping the purpose of her trip to himself. Here you can both discuss personal matters. Evan, why was the car so close to him the best thing you and Clara could have done together?
EWAN MACGREGOR : That's a very difficult question. The answer is simple: Clara co-wrote it with Ruby Caster. After all, because he did it, we did it. Why this thread, this story, should probably be answered by Clara, because she is the one who sat down and made it possible. My reaction was immediate. Clara told me about it, but not much about the script, just because she was doing a story about us. Now it's about other relationships and other parents, but Clara also draws from our stories. DEADLINE: Aside from the themes you may be familiar with as a person, what did you like most about this manuscript when you first read it?
Ewan McGregor : I like the humor in it. These are very serious subjects, but the sense of humor is bright and I love the simplicity of the story.
DEADLINE: They talk about the film on location in Manchester before flying to the premiere at SXSW on Saturday. You're a busy actor and life can be a bit of an itinerant, challenging way to raise a family. Being able to spend time with your daughter watching movies will be a joy for any parent. How does it feel to be connected on such an intimate level?
CLARA MACGREGOR : I want to answer first. It was great to take that time and dive into something together. There are different levels of commitment. Not only do I enjoy spending time with you, I enjoy being a father and that quality time, but I have to appreciate my father's work on a whole other level. You know, I've always appreciated your film work and what I've seen, but to be on the same stage with you, I really got to see how close you are and how you listen and act. promptly. This is great for me; I have to appreciate what you are doing on a different scale.
DEADLINE: Ewan?
Ewan McGregor : Same for me. I'm just proud of him. I am proud every time I see him. I was in that scene with him and there was an incredible ease and naturalness to his playing that I had never experienced before because I had never played with him. What I do with Clara is on a completely different level. There is something very simple about it. And it is quite a lot. I mean, that's a lot for me. It's amazing to be able to play with Clara the way I want.
And I'm honored to have him as a producer, to have him on the crew, and to work with Emma Westenberg. He, Vera [Balder], Greg [Lauritano] and the other producers and Emma, I feel there is a new generation of talent. And I just love being an actor.
TIME: How long can you stay on this film journey?
CLARA MACGREGOR : Actually we had 22 days of shooting, and I was there for two months before doing soft and hard preparations. Dad came a little closer to us for the shoot, and then 22 days passed.
DEADLINE: when parents tell their child to do something, they instinctively do the opposite. Clara, how often did you do this when you worked with your father? What have you learned from your experience that can help you progress as an actress?
CLARA MACGREGOR : I saw how honest my father was as an actor and how humble he was when Emma was shouting and acting. Always listen, always answer honestly. We trust each other a lot and make it happen.
DEADLINE: Evan, are you tempted to give him advice and wait until he gets it from someone in authority?
Ewan McGregor : No, I haven't. He doesn't need advice. It's two people sharing an experience. If there is a question, I think there was a car or two, I'm happy to help, but I don't feel the need to push him. We have a great director in Emma and she guides us both. Not mine. There was a very angry moment when Clara expressed her anger to me. I had a feeling he would hold back a little when he said those words to his father. Do you remember Clara? And another moment in the motel room. I said do it and give it to me! It was not a note, but a desire to take it. It really helps me. And it feels safe. It's hard because you end up taking out your anger on your own parent.
TIME: I won't say exactly, but there was a moment when a father worried about his daughter knew she was okay. Ewan, your reaction at the time was quite emotional. Is it too much to think that having a movie princess as a daughter helped you?
EWAN MACGREGOR : [Laughs]. I don't know if I really understand what meta means. But if it means what I think it means, I think this movie really does a lot. It can be very meta and remain a work of fiction and not biographical at all. Clara, the scene where you come in and yell at me takes me back (laughs). metament.
CLARA McGregor : Metamoment.
Ewan McGregor : I don't think it's an autobiography, but we played father and son, and that was us. Do not put it in the room. Not exactly our story, but being a father and son, all the looks and the little things, and just sitting in the car together. We have something to sign.
TIME LIMIT: What do you need to open the depth of your emotions?
EWAN McGregor : Exactly. Clara, it's amazing to hear you say it only took three and a half weeks. It feels like months have passed since I have such a rich experience in my memory. The budget is tight and you spend every available inch of money. Shooting so many scenes in one day and being one of them was such a great experience for the actors that just 22 days was crazy for me.
DEADLINE: Clara, you organized it all. Would you hire and work with this actor again?
CLARA McGREGOR : Yes, I think I certainly would. He is the best. I mean, it doesn't get any better than that, right. I really don't want it to end. I think it brought us closer, didn't it?
Ewan McGregor : Yes, of course. Would you watch your daughter do something like that? I'm still in awe and can't wait to be there [tonight] to see it in front of an audience for the first time with you, Clara. They create it to get in front of people and make people feel something. And it will be a lot of fun to get it right. I can't wait, I can't believe I'll be there, I'll be in Manchester now. But I won't miss it.
