Enjoy spending time outdoors in the parks, preserves, recreation areas, beaches and more in New Jersey? If yes, how can you improve your experience? If you rarely go out, what can you do to make being outdoors more accessible and welcoming?
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) wants to know!
As the agency responsible for hundreds of state parks, forests, recreation areas, historic sites, and natural areas, DEP just launched an online survey to find out how New Jersey residents currently use the road and what additional facilities and programs they would like. see. . . . . in future.
“Every New Jersey resident deserves easy access to quality parks and open spaces where they can enjoy the environment we share,” said Sean Latourette, Environmental Commissioner.
New Jersey is an exceptionally diverse state, both in terms of geography and population. The biggest challenge is ensuring that all residents, whether they live in cities, suburbs or rural villages, have access to outdoor recreation opportunities in their communities and have a say in the allocation of public funds.
Last spring, LaTourette launched a new initiative called "Dehors, Ensemble!" to increase audience engagement and input. It also established a 24-member Outdoor Recreation Advisory Committee to oversee updating the New Jersey Comprehensive Wildlife Recreation Plan (SCORP), which guides decisions about land acquisition, parks, funding, and programs.
The New Jersey SCORP must be renewed every five years in order for the state to continue receiving federal grants, such as those provided by the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Recreational Trails Program. Together, these grants net New Jersey between $7 million and $8 million a year.
Let's go out together! The initiative aims to create green space in New Jersey's cities and communities of color to improve access to nature and the quality of life in those communities.
New decors, ensemble! The poll, available online through March 22, will entitle 9 million New Jersey residents to vote. This is voluntary and confidential and will take approximately 10 minutes at https://dep.nj.gov/outside-together/survey/.
The poll asks residents what they did outdoors in New Jersey last year. For example, they walked or hiked, biked, skied or snowboarded, exercised in the fields or fields, took the children to the playground, fished, birdwatched, kayaked, picnicked, camped, hunted, sat still or meditated, attended one guided tour. a nature walk or a history tour, a dip in a public pool, a visit to a water park, or a dip in the ocean, lake, or river?
Another question is to ask residents what prevents them from participating in outdoor recreation as much as they would like. Barriers may include lack of transportation, crowded parks nearby, no one to walk, safety issues, lack of amenities such as toilets and fountains, inability to afford supplies and equipment, not knowing what is available, concerns about ticks and other insects. , or lack of cellular coverage in remote areas.
In the survey, residents were asked what would most motivate them to leave their home. Features include easier access to parks by public transport, more walking trails, additional parking at popular locations, food concessions and park equipment rentals, more "active" park features such as playgrounds, more "passive" features such as tables for picnic or more guided nature walks. etc. Programming.
The survey asks for demographic information, including age, gender, race/ethnicity, zip code, education level, household size and composition, and language spoken at home. However, it does not ask for participant names, addresses, or other identifying information.
"Go together! My DEP colleagues and I look forward to learning more about the outdoor needs of the people we serve,” Latourette said. an outdoor recreation plan that better connects people to nature and to each other. »
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic three years ago, many people have rediscovered the pleasure of spending time outdoors. Being in the sun and being outdoors is not only good for your physical and mental health, but it is also a fun and safe way to meet up with friends and family.
What do you wish for yourself, your family and your community? Whether it's bird walks, community gardens, hiking and biking trails, basketball courts, or quiet meditation spots, now is the time to talk! You have the opportunity to help shape the future of outdoor recreation in your area and ensure that New Jersey's overburdened communities are adequately represented.
